Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Nandy Toro, and you’re listening to the Vertebre Chiropractic Studio podcast, coming to you from right here in Winter Garden, Florida. Today we’re talking about something that affects just about everyone at some point — back pain. And more importantly, we’re talking about how to stop it before it starts.

Now here’s the thing. Most people think back pain just… happens. Like it comes out of nowhere. You bend down to pick something up, and suddenly you’re done for the week. But the truth is, most back pain builds up slowly over time. It’s the result of small daily habits — things we do, and things we don’t do — that add up day after day.

The good news? That means small daily changes can actually make a huge difference. So let’s talk about a few of them.

First up — how you sit. I know, I know. You’ve heard this before. But hear me out. Most of us are sitting for hours every single day. At a desk, in the car, on the couch. And when we sit, we tend to slouch. The lower back rounds out, the head drifts forward, and the whole spine is under stress. Over time, that stress adds up.

Here’s what I want you to try. When you sit down, think about stacking your spine. Hips back in the chair, feet flat on the floor, and just a gentle natural curve in your lower back. You don’t have to sit perfectly rigid. Just check in with yourself every hour or so. Set a little timer on your phone if you have to. And if you can, stand up and move around for even just a couple of minutes. That simple break does more for your back than you might realize.

Now the second thing — and this one surprises people — is hydration. Your spinal discs, those little cushions between the bones of your spine, are largely made of water. They depend on you staying hydrated to maintain their height and their ability to absorb shock. When you’re dehydrated, those discs lose some of that cushioning. Over years, that contributes to wear and breakdown. So drinking enough water every day isn’t just good for your kidneys. It’s literally feeding your spine.

Most adults do well with somewhere around half their body weight in ounces of water per day. So if you weigh one hundred and sixty pounds, that’s around eighty ounces. Just something to keep in mind.

The third habit — and this is a big one — is gentle daily movement. Notice I said gentle and daily. You don’t need to run a marathon. You don’t need a fancy gym routine. What your spine needs is consistent, low-impact movement. Walking is honestly one of the best things you can do for your back. It activates the muscles that support your spine, improves circulation to the discs, and keeps everything moving the way it’s supposed to. Even a ten or fifteen minute walk in the morning makes a real difference over time.

And if you want to add a little more, some simple stretching for the hips and hamstrings goes a long way. Tight hips and tight hamstrings pull on your lower back. Loosening those up takes a lot of pressure off your spine. You don’t need anything complicated. Just a few gentle stretches held for about thirty seconds each. That’s it.

Now, here’s some real talk. These habits are powerful, but they work best when your spine is already moving well and aligned properly. If you’ve got stiffness, recurring aches, or pain that keeps coming back no matter what you do — that’s your body telling you something needs to be looked at. That’s exactly what we’re here for.
