The Connection Between Stress and Physical Pain

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Vertebre Chiropractic Studio podcast, Dr. Nandy Toro dives deep into the powerful and often overlooked connection between stress and physical pain. Many people think of stress as purely a mental experience, but Dr. Toro breaks down exactly how stress creates measurable, tangible tension and discomfort throughout the body.

If you’ve ever noticed your shoulders creeping up toward your ears during a tough week or felt a nagging backache during a stressful period, this episode will help you understand why that happens — and what you can do about it.

Dr. Toro brings her clinical perspective from Vertebre Chiropractic Studio in Winter Garden, Florida to help listeners recognize the physical toll stress takes and explore practical approaches to finding relief.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Nandy Toro, and you’re listening to the Vertebre Chiropractic Studio podcast, coming to you from right here in Winter Garden, Florida. Today we’re talking about something that honestly affects almost every single person who walks through my door — and that’s the connection between stress and physical pain.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Stress is a mental thing, right? It’s all in your head. But here’s the thing — that’s actually not true at all. Stress is just as physical as it is emotional. And once you understand what’s happening in your body when you’re stressed, a lot of things start to make a whole lot of sense.

So let me break this down for you. When you experience stress — whether that’s a tough week at work, family pressure, financial worry, whatever it is — your brain triggers what we call the fight or flight response. Your nervous system kicks into high gear. Your body floods with stress hormones. Your heart rate goes up, your breathing gets shallower, and here’s the big one — your muscles tighten up. All of them. Your shoulders creep up toward your ears. Your jaw clenches. Your lower back braces. Your whole body gets ready to react to a threat.

Now, that response is actually designed to protect you. Short term, it’s brilliant. But when stress becomes chronic — when it’s not just one hard day but weeks and months of pressure — those muscles never fully let go. They stay in that guarded, contracted state. And that’s when people start coming in telling me things like, “Doctor Toro, I don’t know why, but my neck has been killing me,” or “My upper back is so tight I can barely turn my head.” Sound familiar?

Here’s what’s interesting — chronic muscle tension doesn’t just cause soreness. Over time, it can pull your spine out of its natural alignment. It can compress joints, irritate nerves, and create patterns of pain that seem to come out of nowhere. And because the stress never fully goes away, the pain never fully goes away either. It becomes this cycle — stress causes tension, tension causes pain, pain causes more stress. Around and around it goes.

So what can you actually do about this? A few things. First, pay attention to where you hold your tension. A lot of people have no idea their shoulders are practically touching their ears until someone points it out. Start checking in with your body throughout the day. Take a slow, deep breath and consciously let your shoulders drop. It sounds simple, but it works. Second, movement matters more than you think. Even a short walk around the block can help your nervous system shift out of that stress response. You don’t need a gym — you just need to move. And third, sleep. I cannot stress this enough. When you’re not sleeping well, your body has no chance to recover. Pain thresholds drop, tension builds, and everything feels worse.

Now, here’s when it’s really time to come see us. If you’ve been dealing with neck pain, upper back tightness, headaches, or low back pain that just won’t quit — and you know your stress levels have been high — don’t wait for it to get worse. Chiropractic care helps restore proper alignment to the spine, takes pressure off the nervous system, and helps your body actually shift out of that chronic stress state. We see this every single day at Vertebre Chiropractic Studio. People come in feeling wound up like a spring and leave feeling like they can finally breathe again.

You deserve to feel good in your body. Stress is real, life is busy, and living in pain doesn’t have to be the price you pay for it.

Thank you so much for tuning in today. If this resonated with you, or if you’ve been putting off getting checked out, I’d love to see you. Give us a call or visit us right here in Winter Garden.
